ASPRS LAS file format is a public file format for the interchange of 3-dimensional point cloud data between users. LASapps is a collection of open source applications for the processing of LAS files. LAS files can be very large. GIS applications can get overloaded with these large LAS files. It is sometimes much more convenient to split these large LAS files. LASclip and LASbatchclip are the first two LASapps applications to be developed and can be used to split large LAS files into many smaller LAS files.

In Benoit St-Onge‘s Forest Dynamics Mapping Laboratory at UQAM in Montreal, LASclip and LASbatchclip are used to split large forest cover LAS files into individual tree crown LAS files. This splitting is really a clipping operation. Each tree crown is represented by a polygon. The list of tree crowns is a list of polygons stored in an ESRI SHAPEFILE format. LASclip clips the point cloud against a SHAPEFILE containing polygons. For each polygon, LASclip creates a LAS output file containing the points lying within that polygon. We call these individual tree crown LAS output files “microlas”. Typically, we can have a hundred thousand tree crowns in a given square kilometre of forest, so that is a lot of microlas. LASbatchclip clips multiple point clouds, or LAS files, against multiple SHAPEFILEs. LASbatchclip is multi-thread and relies on LASclip to do the clipping.

LASclip is based on the open source libraries LASlib and LASzip from LAStools (for reading and writing LAS files). The clipping can be greatly accelerated, that is by a factor of 20 or even up to 30 or 50, if a LAX file is generated using LAStools lasindex. LASclip is also based on the open source library GDAL/OGR (for reading SHAPEFILEs). LASclip version 0.1 does not support reprojection, therefore the LAS input file is assumed to be in the same spatial reference system as the input SHAPEFILE.

Founder Stephane Poirier is currently doing a 2018 market analysis and looking for growing a complete startup team.

There is a possibility for the development to start again in fall 2018.

LASAPPS 2018 may be released sometimes in 2019.
